Chicha back?

Chicha dropped a comeback performance and Arteaga lifted some silverware. What else happened?

  • Look, we all wish Javier Hernandez was still in Europe but he plays in MLS. That does not mean he cannot be a meaningful contributor to El Tri. His form in 2020 was more to blame for his absence from Mexico’s squad than his transfer choice. Just look at Tata’s insistence on calling up Rodolfo Pizarro and Jonathan dos Santos. It’s safe to say the door is still open on his national team career. However, long gone are the days where he is an automatic call up. With all that being said, I find it hard to believe he won’t be wearing the latest Adidas trash Mexico kit this summer. It comes down to health and player availability. Raul Jimenez is likely out for the Summer and Henry Martin is a candidate to join Jose Juan Macias and Alexis Vega in Tokyo. Tata’s options at #9 are thin and the last 2 friendlies showed that Mexico cannot use a “False 9” effectively. So while some are scoffing at the hat trick, I am excited and happy to see Chicha scoring again. Beyond sentimental value, he could prove to be really useful in the absence of other players. An in-form Chicharito can still lead Mexico’s attack, at least for this summer.

  • Congrats to Gerardo Arteaga on lifting the Belgium Cup with Genk. They still have a chance at a Champions League spot.
