Eredivisie Preview: Mexican Edition

The Eredivisie was set to kick off this past weekend but a police strike caused several games to be postponed. PSV and FC Twente were amongst the games pushed into midweek.

PSV

Andres Guardado is coming off a great Gold Cup tournament for Mexico. A tournament that saw him walk away with the award for best player. This is after  a club season that had 2 major newspapers naming him as the Eredivisie’s best player.  Even the President of Mexico was offering a congratulations on his first season at PSV. Guardado was recently named Vice-Captain and will be counted on to be one of the squad’s leaders. PSV are expected to compete for the league title but they will have Champions League on their plate as well. As is customary for the Eredivisie, the club saw several players leave for teams in Europe’s top 5 leagues. PSV have brought in replacements but will need some time to gel. The club is in need of a starting centerback after Manchester City owned Karim Rekik was loaned to Marseille instead of spending another season at PSV. Luckily for PSV (and Guardado), Hector Moreno seems to be the player to fill that void. After some back and forth between Espanyol and PSV, reports are pointing towards Moreno finalizing a deal to join Guardado at PSV.

Kickoff: 8/11/15, PSV vs ADO,  11:30am (Central) Univision Deportes Network, NGSN

FC Twente

Jesus “Tecatito” Corona was a busy man this Summer. He was the only Mexican player to participate in Copa America and Gold Cup. The Sonora-born winger will be expected to carry even more of the attacking load for FC Twente this season. The club was going through financial troubles and were even docked points last season as a result. This transfer window saw Twente sell several players and let others go to regain control of their financial situation. The club is keeping their squad size around 20 and brought in several players on loan to keep wages down. Financial stability is the main objective this season and the club will likely not find themselves in a fight for European spots. Tecatito should see double digit league goals this season in what will likely be his last at Twente.

Kickoff: 8/12/15,  FC Twente vs Groningen, 11:30am (Central) NGSN

How To Watch The Eredivisie?

-It appears Univision Deportes Network picked up TV Rights for the Eredivisie this season. They appear to be making the effort to show weekly matches.

-ESPN3 will show matches as well but if its anything like last season, they will be few and far between.

NGSN is a relatively new service/app that launched earlier this year. It streams the Eredivisie, the Portuguese first division and a host of other competitions. NGSN launched with a free beta and I used the service to watch several matches during this period. It worked well on my phone, desktop, and tablet. Going forward, the service will cost $8.99 per month but if you use promo code “WATCHSOCCERNOW” by 8/31/2015, you only be charged $4.99 per month for the first 12 months. It also comes with a 30 day free trial and is month to month with no contract. The service has signed on Andres Guardado to be an endorser; he is front and center on their website. I recommend the service if you want to watch Tecatito, Guardado, Moreno, Davila, Jimenez,  and Herrera play their club matches without having to deal with subpar streams.
