Kick Around – 4/22

Mexicans rejoiced after Chicharito put Real Madrid into the next round of the Champions League. The Madrid striker had plenty of good looks but was not able to put one in the back of the net until only a few minutes before it was set to go into extra time. His fellow countryman, Jimenez, was on the bench but did not see the field.

Kick Around- 4/21

I read a lot. I consume articles, blog posts, reddit threads, YouTube interviews, and transfer rumors all day. Sometimes its from the obvious sources (ESPN) but other times its from an obscure YouTube channel or a dude with a dozen followers. So I’m going to try something new and share the good ones. I’ll try to pick stuff I think is worth reading/watching about El Tri and Mexican soccer alike. I hope to do this a couple times week, hopefully more if the content is there. If you see anything good out there, send me a link. Below is my first batch of links.

Weekend Schedule- 4/18

We are reaching the home stretch of the club season. Some Mexicans are playing for promotion (Layun), some for titles (Guardado), and others are just trying to show their quality for the summer window (Moreno).

Mexico vs USA

via @T2150 from Twitter

This game might be the least exciting rivalry game for me in years but it is still Mexico vs US. Although Piojo said Mexico needs to win, one look at the rosters and you’ll realize Mexico might be the underdog. While the core of Jurgen’s team has come back to MLS, Piojo’s core players mostly ply their trade in el viejo continento and not LigaMX.

Still, Piojo needs to evaluate the player pool to decide on 46 players to call up this summer for their 2 tournaments. He seems to understand that is where his priorities are and his callups reflect that.

Mexico vs Paraguay

Mexico had a sluggish performance on Saturday and finish off their FIFA date with another friendly tonight against Paraguay. It is nearly a brand new starting XI with Diego Reyes as the only hold over. Injuries forced Piojo’s hand but this should be a good look at the base of the Copa America team.

Mexico vs Ecuador

It is about that time again. Its time for some friendlies! I know many people say friendlies don’t mean anything but I believe they can be valuable. No, I’m not talking about wins or losses. I would much rather lose 1-0 and play well than win 1-0 and play like crap. I am talking about how the team plays in those games.  With a busy summer approaching, there are a few things I will keep an eye on during the game against Ecuador on Saturday

Raul Jimenez v Getafe (3/21/15)

Raul Jimenez picked up a rare start this past weekend for Cholo’s Atletico Madrid. I went back and watched this match with the intention of logging every time he did anything. I was pleasantly surprised with how active he was in his 64 minutes of action. He seemed to understand what was expected of him and worked well with Fernando Torres. After re-watching the match, I feel a little more at ease with where he is in his development. Scroll on for my notes and some videos.

Piojo’s Callups

As most predicted, the list for March’s friendlies is out. Most of the list has the same players Piojo has called in the past. This is usually where I breakdown his list but I am more interested in the U23 list for the Brasil friendly later this month. I’ll wait until that leaks out to dissect both. For now, let us enjoy this Weeekend’s Schedule.

Weekend Schedule- 3/14

@FutMexSource with a nice graphic showing called up Europeos

The Federation has released their list of foreign based players getting called up. I am sure this week will see the final list come out. There aren’t any must see games this week that stand out to me but plenty of solid match ups.

Where are they now? – Edgar Ivan Pacheco

While catching up on all the Copa Mexico action via Twitter, I saw a name of a player I hadn’t thought of in a while. Edgar Ivan Pacheco. I got me thinking..
