Mexico Stock Watch

The March window is over with Mexico drawing against Portugal and Belgium. Both were good results and showed what Mexico can do against top opponents. This is the last call up before the World Cup roster will be announced in May. So who improved their stock ?

Stock Up

  • Brian Gutierrez: The real revelation this window for Vasco. He led Mexico with 4 key passes over 2 games and was not afraid of the moment. He can play in multiple positions and provides that offensive spark without neglecting his defensive duties. From a long shot just a few months ago to a World Cup lock, it has been quite a ride for him.
  • Julian Quinones: Mexico have struggled to find a consistent attacker to join Raul Jimenez but that search appears to be over. Many have suspected Julian could be the solution but Vasco hasn’t really given him a chance. These last 2 games prove he can be an asset as a starter or spark plug off the bench. Of note, he linked up very well with Gutierrez.
  • Israel Reyes: He was always going to be on the final roster but he has jumped to RB 1, in my eyes. The starting CBs are set in stone and Reyes was never going to play ahead of either Johan Vasquez or Cesar Montes but he has played his way into the conversation as Mexico’s starting Right Back.
  • Erik Lira: The gap between Edson Alvarez and the # 2 defensive midfielder is no longer a huge gulf. I still think an in-form Edson is the clear starter but with Lira’s emergence, Vasco does not have to rush Edson back after his latest injury. Competition is good and having more options at d-mid is necessary since we all know Edson is prone to unnecessary yellow cards.

Stock Down

  • Julian Araujo: A badly timed injury saw him miss a last chance to impress Vasco and the staff. Plus with Israel doing well as a defensive Right Back has all but sealed him missing the roster. On the bright side, his club career seems to be back on track.
  • Guillermo Ochoa : I did not think he had a shot at reclaiming the # 1 jersey but I think theres even less of a chance now. He did not see any minutes in these 2 big friendlies.
  • Obed Vargas: The 20yr old showed he has the ability to play at this level but his mistakes during the 2 games did not help his case. He played well in spurts over 2 games and it is clear to see getting him to switch national team allegiance will pay off in the future for Mexico. I still think he is worth a roster spot over other midfield options.
