El Tri Drops to 11 in FIFA Rankings

Going into the March friendlies, Mexico was 9th in FIFA’s rankings but have fallen 2 spots after losing to Wales and beating Costa Rica. They still remain within shouting distance of a seeded place at Qatar World Cup.

Many think these rankings do not do a good job of properly rankings nations and I tend to fall in that camp. However, until FIFA uses another method World Cup seeds, these rankings are important. Being a seeded country won’t guarantee a “quinto partido” at the next World Cup but it could mean an easier group. Either way, Mexico should try to maximize their rankings as other countries have done in the past. With Poland making the decision to hardly play friendlies in order to keep their ranking high.
